The transformative power of Muay Thai.
A journey to the Land of Smiles, a Muay Thai training in Thailand.
For quite some time, I had been diligently practicing Muay Thai kickboxing at the gym. In the interim, I even participated in some beginners and C class matches, and things were going well. However, life had an additional challenge in store for me as I took on the responsibility of managing a gym alongside my training. Balancing both endeavors was no easy feat, and it required a tough decision making process.
Training for those matches demanded tremendous effort, and it was crucial not to underestimate the hard work that went into it. While advanced fighters made it all look effortless, the reality was that a lot of training was involved. Furthermore, if I fought on weekends, I had to teach an aerobics class on Monday mornings at ten o'clock.
Teaching the class sometimes proved challenging, especially when I was still recovering from a match. I couldn't let the twenty-five women before me know that I was exhausted. Nonetheless, my passion for kickboxing pushed me forward. I continued attending classes at the gym, obtained my trainer's certificate, fought in occasional matches, and was eager to take my skills to the next level by training in Thailand.
So it came to be that as a twenty two year old young man, I embarked on my first airplane trip to the far east, Thailand the mecca of Thai boxing. Two of my friends and fellow students accompanied me, and together, we set off for the 'Land of Smiles,' intending to stay there for a month.
The primary purpose of our journey was, of course, to train with some of the best fighters and experience the rich martial arts culture that Thailand offered. Our destination was the renowned 'Sit Yodtong Muay Thai Camp' in Pattaya, where numerous famous Dutch and foreign fighters had honed their skills under the tutelage of the master, Yodtong Senanan. This camp was legendary and had produced champions like the illustrious Samart Payakaroon.
Upon arriving, we were warmly welcomed, although it took us some searching to find the camp, located outside Pattaya on the other side of Sukhumvit Road, amidst the wilderness. We were astounded by the intense training regimen of the Thais, their tireless efforts on the pads, countless laps in the tropical heat, and their unwavering determination.
Our agreement to attend the afternoon training at half past three was followed dutifully. The training lasted until five, with an optional extension of another half-hour. We engaged in rigorous activities, including warm up jump ropes, bag work, and clinching with Thai trainers. The training concluded, and the first session left us exhilarated.
The next day, we were invited to join the morning run at six o'clock with all the camp participants. While I was initially hesitant, I decided to give it a try. However, the early morning run was not my cup of tea, and I realized it wasn't for my friends either. We participated for that one time, and then we decided to focus on our regular training sessions.
Throughout the following month, my daily routine revolved around training and relaxation. Mornings were spent at the beach, followed by a visit to the training camp at half past two, where we trained intensely until around six o'clock in the evening. After a brief period of rest and nourishment at the hotel, we ventured out to explore the vibrant nightlife of bars, dance halls, and other entertainment venues.
As the days went by, I found it increasingly difficult to concentrate solely on training, as my mind would often wander to the intriguing sights of the evening. I resolved that when I returned home, I would plan another trip to explore the other side of Pattaya, as I was enamored by its charm.
Despite indulging in some late nights, I realized the importance of rejuvenation and decided to skip the beach occasionally to appear at the training camp feeling more rested. My time in Thailand was a remarkable and enriching experience, primarily focused on training. However, I knew that my next visit would entail more leisure, exploration, and enjoyment of the beautiful paradise that Thailand offered.
Once back in Holland, I immediately started preparing for another journey to Pattaya. Within three months, I was back in the Land of Smiles, ready for a delightful and well deserved month long vacation, immersing myself in the wonders of this captivating destination.
