British 'Policeman' and 'Consul' Howard Miller bids farewell to Pattaya after 14 years.
March 2016, Howard Miller reflects on an eventful journey.
Renowned as Thailand's most famous foreign tourist policeman and former Honorary British consul, Howard Miller has recently announced his departure from Pattaya and his return to the United Kingdom, following the sale of his assets. After residing in the picturesque Thai resort for a remarkable 14 year period, Howard Miller gained mild fame through his appearances in the thought provoking television series, 'Big Trouble in Tourist Thailand.' Expressing his gratitude to friends, Miller emphasized that the time had come for him to move on, while reminiscing about the incredible experiences he had throughout his journey.
Originally hailing from Southend on Sea, Miller settled in Pattaya around the same time that a close friend established 'Secrets A Go Go.' He quickly became the Group Leader of the Tourist Police Volunteer Assistants, skillfully fostering positive relationships with both Thai locals and foreigners alike. His charismatic presence anchored the captivating threads of the fly on the wall series, which captivated audiences on Bravo and Sky in the UK, as well as viewers worldwide.
The television series courted some controversy, particularly due to its exposure of scams in Thailand, such as the infamous jet ski scam in Phuket and a gold scam in Pattaya. However, Miller skillfully steered Pattaya away from the worst of the controversy, while the filmmakers relished in the influx of "idiots abroad," predominantly British tourists.
Shortly thereafter, Miller assumed the position of Britain's Honorary Consul, a role he fulfilled until the Foreign Office decided to revamp the post, much to his chagrin. Undeterred, he swiftly regained the limelight by maintaining his involvement with his media outlet, 'Pattaya City News,' which subsequently evolved into 'Pattaya One.' Additionally, he delved into the go go bar and property businesses, embracing new ventures with his trademark enthusiasm.
Considering the nature of go go bars and fully expecting to read headlines like 'Her Majesty's Vice Consul!' in sensationalist tabloids back home, Miller shared photographs of himself and his co owners at his inaugural go go bar venture in 'Little Britain,' a vibrant enclave in Pattaya reminiscent of the beloved characters 'Lou and Andy' from the eponymous British television series.
In a heartfelt farewell message dispatched from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, Howard Miller conveyed the following sentiments: "After 14 incredible years in Thailand, I am now embarking on a new chapter in the UK, pursuing fresh interests. Although this decision may come as a surprise to some, my intention was to leave discreetly without causing a commotion. I have no regrets about my time in Thailand; in fact, I cherish every moment of my Thai experience and will greatly miss the dear friends I have made along the way. However, the time feels right for me to forge ahead, having successfully liquidated all my assets.
Exciting new challenges await me, and I am fully prepared for the journey ahead, aware that it may not always be smooth sailing. I extend my best wishes to everyone I have encountered during my time in Thailand, and I have complete confidence that the new team at Pattaya One will propel the brand to new heights, ensuring a future brimming with thrilling developments for Pattaya's premier news service.
Farewell, Thailand... It has been an absolute blast!"
